the paralyzing news:

to survive here in paradise
(which is so hard)

is the lowest level 
of achievement as in 

when might the plane crash?
the minute you relax as in

add the right e and best
opposites on you as in

subtract the c and exciting
opposites harder as in

duskwise how to know bat 
from bird? one cuts in angles

the other curves as in
how about a new dog 

and what to call her? 
consider Astonishment

Amy Bagwell’s poems have appeared most recently in Folio, American Literary Review, storySouth, and Smartish Pace and in the collaborative chapbook Wretched Yew (TSP). She co-founded the artists’ residency nonprofit Goodyear Arts and the Wall Poems project, both in Charlotte, North Carolina, and holds an MFA from Queens University.
